Willimantic – In early March, EASTCONN’s Capitol Theater Arts Academy (CTAA) will present a fully staged performance of 13, a family-friendly musical, at EASTCONN’s Capitol Theater, 896 Main St., in Willimantic.
The public is invited to performances on Fri. and Sat., March 1 and 2, 2013, at 7 p.m. A matinee will also be performed on Sat., March 2, at 2 p.m.
Leading roles in 13 will be played by CTAA students Matthew Hohman, 13, from Chaplin, as Evan; Rachael Vroman, 14, from Hampton, as Patrice; Addison Beck, 15, from Scotland, as Brett; Lauren Leavitt, 13, from Columbia, as Kendra; Ruby Williams, 13, from Columbia, as Lucy; and Emerson Femc, 12, from Storrs, as Archie.
“It’s my first time as a lead, so I’m nervous and excited,” said Matt Hohman during a recent rehearsal at EASTCONN’s Capitol Theater, which houses the CTAA program.
“I like the choreography and I am learning new dance moves,” said Caroline “Missy” Duers, one of the 13 cast members. “I like that we get to bring in our own clothing for costumes, because the show is very modern. The show is also very funny!”
The musical is directed by Shane Kegler, with musical direction by Kasia Popovic and choreography by Rachel Roccoberton. Costumes are designed by Miriam Drew and sets by Debra Siegel. The CTAA Musical Theater Program, which is performing 13, enrolls students, ages 9-15, from Chaplin, Columbia, Coventry, Hampton, Lebanon, Mansfield, North Windham, Norwich, Scotland, Storrs, Tolland and Willimantic.
The plot of 13 revolves around Evan Goldman, a 13-year-old New Yorker whose parents have just gotten divorced. He must move to a small town in Indiana, where he just wants to make new friends and survive the social ups and downs of school. But, things get complicated and middle school life poses big challenges for Evan, who ultimately discovers that cool is where you find it, and sometimes where you least expect it. With a rock score from Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown, 13 is a high-energy musical for all ages.
Regular tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and children under 12. Call EASTCONN’s Capitol Theater Box Office at 860-465-5636, weekdays, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Capitol Theater Box Office opens 45 minutes before show time for walk-up ticket sales.
