Willimantic, CT – – African-Cuban artist Gonzalo Menendez Guerra will speak at Eastern Connecticut State University in the Student Center Theatre at 7 p.m. on May 2 about contemporary African-Cuban art and the changes it has undergone since the Cuban revolution.
Guerra has dedicated himself to the plastic arts since the age of 10. Teaching himself how to paint and draw, he achieved the rare distinction of winning various prestigious awards at national and international children’s paintings competitions. These include “Primer Premio del Primer Salon De Pintura Infantil” (1974); “Medalla de Plata, Concurso de Pintura SHANKAR de la INDIA” (1974); “Medalla de Plata, Concurso de Pintura SHANKAR de la INDIA” ( 1976); and “Medalla de Oro, Tercer Concurso de Pintura Infantil y Juvenil de FINLANDIA” (1976).
