Nationally recognized blues legends Kal David, Mike
Finnigan and James Montgomery will perform in two, live BLUES SUMMIT:
Triple Threat performances Saturday, April 5, 2008 at 4 and 8 p.m., as
part of the new WindhamARTS Music Series in the Capitol Theater in
Willimantic, CT. The concert series is anticipated to become a
signature event for downtown Willimantic and represents a collaborative
effort between the Lester and Phyllis Foster Foundation, the
WindhamARTS Collaborative and EASTCONN. Six area non-profit
organizations will benefit from the proceeds from four music events
schedule in the coming months.
David Foster, owner of Shaboo Productions contacted the WindhamARTS
Collaborative last year with his intent to support the community again
by bringing nationally recognized recording artists back into
Willimantic, which has not regularly occurred since the close of his
legendary Shaboo Inn. While the calendar of artists is still in the
formative stages, Foster is arranging to bring top artists from a
variety of musical styles to the community.
The seven non-profit organizations in Windham to benefit from the music series include:
Garden Club of Windham
Covenant Soup Kitchen
Windham No-Freeze Project
Willimantic Public Library
McSweeney Senior Center
WindhamARTS Collaborative
Willimantic Whitewater Partnership.
“This series promises to be a terrific opportunity for our region on
multiple levels,” says Jane Homick, Executive Director of WindhamARTS.
“We are exceedingly grateful to the Savings Institute for supporting the
initiative as a business sponsor. Patrons will experience musical legends
in a very intimate 200 seat theater. The events will bring hundreds of
patrons downtown, recognition to our increasingly vibrant arts
community, and several non-profits will receive supportive funding from
the series proceeds! “
Blues musician, Kal David is known for his work as a guitarist, singer and songwriter with some of
the world's preeminent blues musicians as well as for his work in the
early 1970s on Columbia Records. His recording career began as a
teenager as a member of Kal David and the Exceptions with Peter Cetera,
who later became the vocalist for Chicago. Kal later joined musical
forces with guitarist Paul Cotton to form the group, The Rovin' Kind.
Kal has also performed on tour for Etta James and Johnny Rivers, John
Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, where he inherited the lead guitar chair
from Mick Taylor. Kal has also shared the stage with Stevie Wonder,
Bobby Brown, John Entwistle, Larry Carlton, Brian Wilson, Stephen
Stills, Joe Walsh, Paul Young, and Blues greats, Sam Taylor and Floyd
Dixon.
Performing on keyboard for the Blue Summit will be Mike Finnigan.
Finnigan is acclaimed as one of the top session players in rock music
history. He has recorded in the studio with Jimi Hendrix, Crosby,
Stills & Nash, Cher, Ringo Starr, Santana, Dan Fogelberg, John
Hiatt, Alice Cooper, Manhattan Transfer, & Etta James. Mike also
spent extensive time touring with Crosby, Stills & Nash through
most of the 80s & 90s. His noted one-of-a-kind vocal skills deliver
some of the strongest and most exciting ‘blue-eyed soul’ vocals ever
heard.
The third element of the Blues Summit is James Montgomery, front liner
to the James Montgomery Band. His inimitable harmonica playing combined
with incredibly energetic live shows led to the band's quick ascension
on the New England music scene. Within two years, the James Montgomery
band was among the hottest acts in Boston along with J. Geils and
Aerosmith, and they were quickly signed to a multi-album deal with
Capricorn Records. James has since recorded six albums, and toured with
many major artists, including Aerosmith, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce
Springsteen, the Allman Brothers, Steve Miller and others. He has
jammed on stage with B.B.King, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, Jr. Wells,
James Cotton, Charlie Daniels, Bonnie Raitt, Greg Allman, Laverne
Baker, Patti LaBelle, and Peter Wolf among others, including an
impromptu session with Mick Jagger at New York's "Trax".
