September 2006: Square Between The Mirrors |

Mansfield artist George Jacobi seizes the space between
representational and abstract art and playfully weaves visual
recognition with the potential for another level of creative interplay.
His solo exhibit, "Square Between the Mirrors", manipulates digital,
photographic images and is scheduled for display at the Windham Art
Center and Gallery August 8 through September 7. An opening
reception is planned for Friday, August 11th, from 5- 8 p.m. The event
and exhibit are free and open to all.
Jacobi weaves "photoquilts" from vertical and horizontal slices of
photographs, which provide the instant comprehension of a photograph,
yet generate an alternative and individualized emotional reaction for
the viewer. Although a combination of colors and forms can be visually
exciting by itself, in this way he feels he can express more.
Juxtaposed shapes, lines, and colors convey a message in the language
of visual art, while letting the viewer find their own social,
psychological or emotional story. "A good idea is like finding a full
toy box," George says. "When you lift the lid, you can play with all
the toys in it until you have tired of them." The photoquilts encourage
playful possibility.
Mr. Jacobi graduated as an English major
with a minor in Fine Arts from the University of Connecticut in 1971
and subsequently became involved with digital photography as an
extension of one career path as a writer and illustrator of fly
fishing. Mr. Jacobi will talk about his work and technique at the
opening and on Saturdays.
