March 2007: Three in 3 |
|
|
Seldom does one find one artist that captures the spirit of a region. The Windham Arts Center is proud to boast three such artists in Shauna Shane, Annie Wandell, and Sonja Weber in the upcoming “Three in 3” exhibit from March 8 through April 6, 2007 in the Main Gallery.
Their opening reception March 9th welcomed over 150 visitors who joyfully acknowledged the accomplishments of these classic Windham artists.
Each artist is unique in her own perspective.
Annie Wandell says of
her work: "Two of my favorite subjects are buildings and streets. Some
have noticed that I seldom include people in these scenes, and I
suppose this means something, but I don't consciously exclude people. At the same time, I don't feel I have to include them in order to make
the painting complete…and that the paintings “have some mystery and
humor, which I hope the viewer will find intriguing.” Shauna Shane
relocated from Yellowstone over 20 years ago, where she had been an
artist-in-residence. After planting her feet in Northeastern
Connecticut, she founded the now popular Artists Open Studios. Shauna
says: “I have found that my art is my musical instrument; taking years
of study and practice to master. I believe that having spent 25 years
as a full time artist I am now beginning to understand how far the
journey is, and the talent I am blessed with is the passion that makes
every moment I am immersed in the artistic exp erience a joy that goes
deep into my soul. My goal is simple: to share my love and appreciation
of the natural world with others.” Shauna teaches at Riverworks
Arts Center in Storrs. Willimantic resident Sonja Weber is also a
working artist who has been painting, photographing, and teaching in
the area for over 30 years. She “paints real things – people, squash,
ponds.” As for her landscapes, whether she’s out there with an easel or
just walking past with a camera, the moment to paint is when it “makes
my heart leap.”
