The Windham Arts Collobarative is pleased to present an exhibit of work by 20 emerging artists residing east of the Connecticut River. Juried by Paul Zelanski, our 2nd Annual Emerging Artist Exhibition runs from June 9 – July 12, 2007. An opening reception and award ceremony occurred Saturday, June 9th from 4 – 7 pm.

Following the success of the 2006 Emerging Artists Exhibition, the Collaborative continues to host this exciting show, which provides young artists an opportunity to share their work with the public, some for the first time. The show will include selections paintings, drawings, print, sculpture, mixed media, photographs, and digital art from twenty artists residing east of the Connecticut River .

Juror, Paul Zelanski

Having exhibited internationally and published many books on design and color, professor emeritus and juror Paul Zelanski, selected from over 90 pieces of submitted artwork of various mediums for originality, execution, and intent.   Mr. Zelanski taught the first color and graphic design courses at the University of Connecticut after receiving a Certificate from Cooper Union, his BFA from Yale (as a student of Joseph Albers), and MFA from Bowling Green State University. Of the submissions, Mr. Zelanski says, "The work submitted was very good and it was a hard thing to pick just the amount to fill the gallery space." He also reminds young artists that every juror is different and not to be discouraged if eliminated, but to keep on working. Cash prizes ($250, $100, and $50) and an invitation for a solo exhibit in the Center's Main Gallery are awarded at the reception and ceremony. The Winning Pieces

The first prize, a $250 cash award, has beenawarded to Lindsay Messecar for The Graeae, 12x14, graphite on paper.Messecar is realist illustrator working with science fiction and fantasysubject matter. Of her work, Messecar writes, “My ultimate goal is to becomea freelance illustrator. I would like to paint covers for novels andchildren's literature, and illustrate children's books.”


The second prize, a $100 cash award recipient is Joshua Long for his digitalphotograph In Lights We Trust. This piece is the tenth image from the series“Transition out of Transient Insomnia.” Long’s influences include AnthonyGoicolea, David Hilliard, and Gregory Crewdson. Regarding waking paranoia,Long writes “I use a panoramic view style to express movement. I create awide, narrow picture to move their eyes and mind along. Another importantpart of my work is the reoccurrence of the main character, which is in fact myself.”

The third prize, a cash award of $50 has been awarded to Randy McMahon, for
his sculpture titled, The War Machine. This colorful mixed media sculpture
stands 7’ tall and 3’ wide.
