Eastern’s Akus Gallery - Sand Mandala
A MUST SEE!

On Dec. 1, two of the Dalai Lama’s senior monks from Namgyal Monastery Institute of Buddhist Studies will be at Eastern Connecticut State University to create a sand mandala – an intricate three-dimensional work of art that represents the transitory nature of all material things.

Visitors are invited to watch the creation and the strategic placement of each grain of sand and also to attend a University Hour talk on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 3 p.m. about the monks’ work.

A typical sand mandala can take several weeks to create, and upon completion, is dismantled, releasing the deity’s blessings into the world.

This is why the sand is generally collected in jars, wrapped in silk, and transported to a river or other place with moving water where it can be released back into the nature that it came from. The mandala to be created at Eastern will be walked to a nearby river with students on Dec. 9 at 11 a.m.
