The Windham Arts
Collaborative presents a retrospective of the work of local artist Ruth
DaVega Gunn beginning Friday October 10th. Gunn’s show, Eighty-seven ½ Years of Creativity: A Retrospective
represents the artist’s expansive forays into a variety of mediums over
the years including acrylics, pastels, watercolor, oil, collage and
painting on ceramic tile. The exhibit will be on display at the
WindhamARTS Main Gallery, located at 866 Main Street, Willimantic from
October 10 – November 1, 2008. The public is invited to an opening
reception on Friday October 10th, 5 – 7 PM.
Ruth DaVega Gunn has been immersed in the world of art since the 1920s when her parents enrolled her in a progressive school in Montclair New Jersey. The early influence in her grade school years lead her to continue with her art as an adult and she opened a studio in Groton Connecticut where she worked in clay. DaVega studied under Clarence Brodeur of New Haven, John Massimino of the Paier School of Art and George DeGroat of Los Angeles. She was influenced by the art nouveau movement and was drawn to the work of Klimt and Beardsley, which can be seen in many of her portraits and in her ceramic tile paintings with their rush of color and simple line. Gunn’s landscapes which are more impressionistic reflect her years of travel to Mexico, California, and Columbia and as well as her long time residence in New England. Ms. DeVega Gunn has exhibited at the John Slade Ely House, the Willoughby and Blackstone Libraries and the Bridgeport Museum of Art, Science and Industry. For many years Ruth painted portraits at outdoor festivals including the popular Mystic Outdoor Art Show.
