VOICES – a theater presentation.
On June 1, 2013, the Stafford Arts Commission will present “Voices of a People’s History of the United States” a production by the late Howard Zinn and his associate Anthony Arnove and Trans Plantations, a short play by Janis Astor Del Valle at the Ben Muzio Town House (Old Town Hall). The event will also herald the HERLAND Music Fair held on June 2
Howard Zinn wrote his book, a compilation of speeches by American citizens, to articulate voices of protest against social injustices and to illuminate the exploitation of the human spirit. Zinn wanted audiences to hear alternative voices from US history, especially the voices of the oppressed, in the hope of inspiring later generations to work towards social justice and change.
The voices chosen will be those of women who articulate the concerns and struggles of women in American society.
Unlike a conventional theater experience, Zinn’s “actors” read speeches by famous and sometimes lesser known women offering testament to the many people who have made history often on a grassroots level. The actors participating in the readings will be Stafford residents and friends of the Arts Commission.
The evening will begin with a performance of Trans Plantations, a short play about the identity crisis of a New York born Puerto Rican lesbian uprooted from the Bronx to Connecticut. The playwright, Janis Astor Del Valle, has had her works published in six anthologies and been awarded a 2011 Artist Fellowship Grant in Playwriting.
