The Hampton Recreation Commission is proud to present one of the world’s most exciting guitar orchestras, in a concert on November 8 at the Parish Hill MiddleSenior High School. The Happy Valley Guitar Orchestra, based in Northampton, MA, has been thrilling audiences with its exciting blend of electric, acoustic, classical, and bass guitars.
The Happy Valley Guitar Orchestra (HVGO) is a grass roots, avant-garde ensemble of 20 + acoustic, and electric guitarists from diverse backgrounds. HVGO was founded in 2008 by guitar-innovator Peter Blanchette (archguitar.com), and has been a run-away success, winning awards for its debut CD. HVGO has been packing venues from classical music halls to rock clubs to outdoor shows at farmers’ markets! Visit the HVGO website to hear samples of their work: <http://hvgo.org/>http://hvgo.org/
In 2011, Blanchette was named “Outstanding Individual Artist,” by Western New England Public Radio for his work with HVGO. HVGO creates new and beautiful music that could only come from such an eclectic mélange. Highlights of the HVGO repertoire include Blanchette’s ‘Fantasy for Oud and Electric Guitar Orchestra,’ pulsing arrangements of Bartok’s ‘Romanian Folk Dances’, Arvo Pärt’s ‘Fratres’ (originally for 8 cellos), unforgettable excerpts from Philip Glass’s opera ‘Satyagraha,’ and uncannily colorful arrangements of Led Zeppelin.
The musicians will be visiting both Hampton Elementary School and Parish Hill H.S. earlier Friday morning to demonstrate their instruments, talk about their work, and perform for the students.
This program is funded in part by the New England States Touring program of the New England Foundation for the Arts, made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts Regional Touring Program and the six New England state arts agencies.
