Willimantic – An EASTCONN Arts at the Capitol Theater (ACT) studenthas earned an Honorable Mention for a poem she submitted to the University of Connecticut’s 26th “Reopening Wounds,” a poem by ACT junior Danielle Wilson, a Windham resident, will be listed as an Honorable Mention winner in the CSW magazine this spring.
CSW is a statewide publication, established in 1988 and published by the Connecticut Writing Project at UConn, Storrs, to recognize excellence in student writing. Each year, volunteer teachers from across the state review nearly 1,000 prose and poetry entries submitted by students in kindergarten through high school. Approximately 100 Connecticut student works are chosen for publication. Works that received Honorable Mention are listed in the CSW magazine. “I’m so happy for Danielle,” said ACT Creative Writing teacher Barbara Greenbaum. “She is such a hard-working, talented writer and she’s an outstanding student.” Wilson, who is a High Honors student at ACT, is one of Greenbaum’s students. Wilson is also an active member of ACT’s SLAM Club.
The Connecticut Writing Project will host a Student Recognition Night on Tues., May 13, at UConn’s Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts. The invitation- only evening program will recognize student winners and students like Wilson whose work has received honorable mention. Students will receive certificates of merit and copies of the magazine. The keynote speaker will be Rita Williams-Garcia, an award-winning children’s literature author.
