Visual Arts Coordinator
This is a position for someone who has proven to be highly skilled with details, who can keep several balls in the air at once (and who enjoys doing it), and who enjoys dealing with artists. The Visual Arts Coordinator will work with guest curators, juries, Real Art Ways’ staff, and will be responsible for the smooth running of the Visual Arts Program.
Responsibilities include: Overall organization of the visual arts program, including organizing art transport, handling and care; verbal and written communication with artists and galleries, compilation and organization of images and other exhibition related material, maintenance of artist and exhibition files (both electronic and physical), utilization of databases, organization of physical spaces, including galleries, office and storage, and creation and supervision of installation work schedules. Opportunities will arise over time for the right candidate to select and organize exhibitions.

Requirements: Candidates must have a minimum of 2 years related work experience (with more experience a plus), knowledge of and enthusiasm for new art and ideas, proven experience and ease with software applications, including word processing, database, spreadsheet, and graphics programs. Must have excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills. Candidates should be capable with basic installation tasks.

Real Art Ways is a vibrant contemporary arts organization. Artists and community are central to its mission. Programs include Visual Arts (solo exhibitions, group exhibitions, performance, public art projects, publications, artist talks), Cinema (independent and international films 7 nights a week), Performing Arts (concerts, theatrical presentations, spoken word events), and Education (panel discussions on timely topics, art and music instruction for neighborhood children, films and talks with school groups, classes in video-making.) Key to Real Art Ways’ approach to presenting and supporting new artistic work is the creation of a dynamic social environment, where people across a range of experiences can come together in the context of new art and ideas.
Real Art Ways is located in a former typewriter factory in Hartford’s Parkville neighborhood. Real Art Ways is an active participant in community affairs, and has worked on design projects for neighborhood gateways, an improved neighborhood core allowing for better pedestrian and bicycle access, and other neighborhood projects.

While we present work by local, regional, national and international artists, much of our programming responds to and benefits from our connection to the city and the region.
