On Sunday April 17, at 3:00 pm, the Willimantic Orchestra, a community based orchestra, will present its free Spring Concert: “Poetic License” in the Concert Hall of the NEW Fine Arts Instructional Center on the ECSU campus. David Vaughan will conduct the orchestra. Admission is free. This concert will be Mr Vaughan’s final concert as conductor of the Willimantic Orchestra, friends, admirers, followers, co- musicians are encourage to attend this special performance.
The program for the Spring Concert includes: Les Preludes by Franz Liszt; Pavanne by Gabriel Faure; Violin Concerto in C Op. 48, Mvt. 1, performed by Kayla De Caprio, winner of Windham Regional Arts Council Youth Musician Competition; and the Symphonic Metamorphosis by Paul Hindemith.
Following the concert there will be a reception to honor Mr Vaughan. David Vaughan has been conducting since age eighteen, making his debut as student conductor of the RHAM High School Symphonic Band. As an undergraduate in Music Education at the University of Connecticut, he studied conducting with Allan Gillespie, conducted the UConn Concert Band on tour, and served as Music Director and Conductor for productions of West Side Story and A Little Night Music. He received his M.M. in Instrumental Conducting from the University in 1985, studying with Larry Rachleff. Subsequently, he has taken master classes with H. Robert Reynolds, Michael Lankester, and Tibor Pustzai. One of three candidates invited by the Willimantic Orchestra to audition for the position of Conductor during the 1990-91 season, he was named Conductor in May 1991.
